Lake Macbride Sailing Club

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about sailing?  Ask us!

Q: When was the Lake Macbride Sailing Club established?
A:  The Lake Macbride Sailing Club was organized in 1964 as the Hawkeye Sailing Club, and was founded as a non-profit organization interested in improving the sailing and facilities at Lake Macbride in Solon, IA. In 1991, the club's name was changed to Lake Macbride Yacht Club, and in 1993 was changed again to Lake Macbride Sailing Club. These changes were made to reflect more accurately the lake on which we sail and to reduce confusion between our club and the University of Iowa Sailing Club also located at the lake.
Q: What does the Lake Macbride Sailing Club do?
A: Our club is dedicated to improving its members' sailing skills through competition. Toward that end, we gather each week (weather permitting) and compete in a series of races. Once a year, we also sponsor an interclub regatta where we invite members from other clubs to join us in a one day series race. During the off-season, we improve our skills through educational meetings designed to teach various aspects of one design sailboat racing. It's not all work though, we also get together several times a year for social events, just to enjoy the company of others who share our passion for sailing and competition.
Q: What kinds of boats do you sail?
A: Currently the only type of boat in use in our racing fleet is the MC scow.  Click here to learn why we choose the MC.
Q: Do I need to own a boat or even know how to sail to join?
A: Not at all.  All that is required is an interest in competitive sailing.  Our current membership includes a wide range of sailing experience, from national champion level sailors to comparative beginners to those with no experience at all.  For those members who do not own boats, there are opportunities to crew during races,  help administrate races, and even borrow a boat from time to time.
Q: How much does it cost to join?
A: Full membership fees are $100 and Associate membership fees are $35.  Full membership is required for members who own their own boat and with that membership, full voting rights are provided.  Associate membership is available to those who do not own boats but want to learn to race competitively, intend to purchase a boat in the future, or just want to be a part of a fun day on a beautiful lake surrounded by the excitement of competitive sailboat racing, however, voting privileges are not provided.
Q: When does the club race?
A: Races are scheduled each Saturday, usually beginning at 1:00 pm, between June and September.
Q: How fast can an MC Scow go?
A: As you can probably imagine, there is considerable debate on this question and the answer depends a lot on wind speed, sea conditions, condition of the boat's hull and sails, and the ability of her skipper, but anecdotal evidence would suggest an answer could be as fast as 10 - 12 kts. (14 mph) while sailing in 30 kt. winds on a reach.  In more reasonable conditions for sailing, however, an MC Scow might sail as fast as 6-8 kts.
